A Game Changer for Indoor Bike Trainers
I am really excited about this new software for training that was developed called TrainerRoad.
This is a brand-new product and just came out of beta testing. Special thanks to my friend, triathlete and collaborator, Lana, that found this and sent it to me.
Let’s be honest, almost everyone struggles with the motivation to spend time on their trainer. It is hot, time seems to stand still, and I’m often unsure if I’m working too hard or not hard enough to be effective. Many people cope with this is in different ways. Some zone out and watch movies, others watch those training DVDs that mimic racing, and some go to spinning classes.
TrainerRoad is a software that has a big library of workouts, and then through your ANT+ devices can record your heart rate, cadence, speed, and power (if you have a power meter.) This software is so revolutionary because you are actually getting coach-quality workouts and immediate feedback about your performance, with minimal cost. The software provides continuous feedback during the workout by showing you a recommended power output compared to your current power output. Even if you don’t have a power meter, the developers of TrainerRoad took the most popular bike trainers and created accurate algorithms to convert your speed into power through something they’ve termed VirtualPower.
In terms of equipment you’ll need a trainer, and at least these 3 accessories:
To start training simply pick a workout from their library, it will load, and it automatically begins when you start pedaling. I did find the seemingly random names of workouts a bit confusing, but most include a description so you know what they entail. Also, for those less familiar with building their own periodization plan, TrainerRoad included a great page showing different workouts based on what you are trying to do. I found this very helpful.
Video Review:
I really enjoyed how quickly the time seemed to fly past on the workout I did. I didn’t find myself thinking – I’ve only been doing this for 15 minutes? Also, it was great to get immediate feedback on my performance and how I could improve and do better. Additionally the workouts include helpful, yet simple directions from a virtual coach, telling you what to expect and how much effort to expend. Also, the software has a full screen mode, or a minimized mode that will let you watch a movie, while still seeing your statistics. I was so impressed with the quality, structure, and design of the workout that I signed up for a subscription immediately.
The other incredible part of this software is that it costs $10.00 a month. If you are serious about training this is a bargain. If you have ever gone to a CompuTrainer class, or thought about getting a coach – you know what a great deal this is. Also, they offer a 30-day money back guarantee if you aren’t satisfied – there’s nothing to lose.
A final note, the story of this company is cool as well. The two owners, Nate and Reid, developed this entire software on nights and weekends because they loved indoor CompuTrainer workouts, but didn’t enjoy paying the $20.00 for each class. They consulted with a coach who had been teaching CompuTrainer classes to get quality, effective workouts. They are looking towards building more profiles for additional trainers and expanding other community features on the site. These guys are talented, friendly, and clearly going places.
The Bottom Line ~
If you are looking for a way to greatly improve your time on the trainer, with quality well-designed workouts, then TrainerRoad is for you. I found the time on the trainer flew past, and I felt the accuracy was spot-on. I loved the immediate feedback of the knowing exactly how hard I was working. For $10.00/month this is a great software that you won’t regret using.

Just to add, they have done a great job integrating the sufferfest videos with their software. Combining the two makes for great workouts.
I’m working on my pedal stroke based on the feedback I’m getting on screen. It’s like a bio feedback exercise and I can see and feel a real progression in a short amount of time
